When a person dies, their soul is returned to the Aetherial Sea, where they will eventually dissipate or be reborn as someone entirely different, because without their memories a person cannot be themself. It stands to reason that the more memories one has, the more they become shaped by them. The more their identity becomes their memories and the less it becomes their soul...
