( It would be remiss to think that Mika, so conscious of Phil's organs squealing, would miss the slight nuance of his hurt; the scraping of the blanket's fabric tighten in his hands, the way his throat goes taut, and there threatens the gentle scent of salt.

It's subtle, underneath the scent and sound of everything else wrong with Phillip, but it's enough that even Mika can recognize there's something wrong.
