I wonder if we aren't looking at this from the wrong angle. If there's indeed been a conspiracy ferrying moonstone around for various, seemingly unrelated experiments— what, exactly, are they gaining from them? What are the common threads? Automata and other artificial or twisted beings such as the chimera or transformed humans of your would-be necromancer?
