[Time to make a break for it!!!!

Cid grins and goes to catch up with a whip of his tail -- it was a tradeoff, but transformation magic is pretty fun, has lots of applications, and isn't too far off from a lot of what he was getting up to at home anyways. Getting a new magic system just means his understanding of magic increases; whenever he gets home or whatever, he's sure it'll come in handy.

Or it'll just be a fun party trick. Good enough.

Getting deeper into the lake is important, and gets them away from the surface currents so it's easier to maneuver as well as adjust the temperature of the water -- but the plant growth gets ever more enthusiastic and the visibility gets ever lower, and of course they're still stuck doing charades.]

You know, I think I just saw a face back there. What's the sage look like again??

[They're not yet at the bottom of the lake so it's not the sage...... maybe it's just his ample imagination.

I rolled for how ugly the face was (6) so looks like they're haunted by the ghost of terrible bulbous underwater Venus flytraps.]

[ If only there were at the bottom of the lake. Anyway, rest in pieces Day, because that face was so ugly (and more importantly, sudden enough) that Day's startled enough to try and punch it even though he's underwater, which would make it pretty pointless.

It ends up missing pathetically (5), but that's also why Day is apparently just deciding, fuck it, he'll try heading straight to the bottom of the lake. He will simply trust in Cid's weed-threshing ability.

...And for someone who didn't try to transform himself but is otherwise used to ridiculous feats of athleticism, he swims like lightning(17). Think fast, Cid, Day's gonna try to get down there to whatever's at the end of the thread as quickly as possible. ]

[Wow, better hope the sage isn't ugly because whatever they encounter at the bottom might be worse than up here and we don't need Day punching the fragment to kingdom come!! Or just, you know, slightly into the mud at the bottom. But still.

Cid nods at the hapless face, like, this is the lot of mob characters (plant), before thrusting his sword right through it and I'm going to say with a (20) his additional swords also basically blast a wide radius on the way towards the bottom. It's not a perfect clear but at least there are no more plant-faces.

Looks like Day is going to keep his lead when it comes to swimming (8), while this guy moseys along weedwhacking. ☆]

[ This is how the bad ending happens: Day accidentally punching the safe's soul fragment into nothing.

Day just barely makes his way down the bottom (10), thanks to Cid largely clearing the way. He squints at the figure of the previous sage down there and summons a small glowing light in one hand so he can take a better look. The threads aren't nearly enough light at the bottom of the lake.

...Then he sees the jewel on the lakebed, and quickly snatches it up. Now for the fun part: getting the hell back up.]

Hmmmm? This guy looks a lot more normal than I thought.

[In fact, this sage (miraculously intact) looks more like an isekai protagonist than most of them!!

Which isn't a bad thing, but does lead to Cid muttering something about helping the competition and competition makes the market. Some sort of stonks line is making waves somewhere in his dubious braincells but that's not important. He's also vaguely evaluating his own performance on this mission as a shadowtagonist but that's also not important, because they're not done yet.

He looks up at the completely invisible light of the storm above and the turbulent waters, which have calmed down here and are a little warm thanks to Cid continuously messing with it. Little bubbles and a bit of froth float by, not quite congruous with any of the environment down here.

He nods at Day and makes a gesture that looks sort of like a whale spout.]

Now that we know where we're going..... We could go faster?

[ Day watches Cid's gesture and notices the bubbles around them, and he...thinks he gets what Cid's idea is. He also thinks that he's probably going to end up regretting this, but go faster is preferable, and...well, after everything, maybe they deserve to try something potentially silly. End this mission in the middle of a storm with something flashy.

So, he nods, and grips onto the jewel tighter. ]

Hmhmhm... Looks like it's time to seek the storm, once again.

[I'm sorry, when he gets excited at moments like these he just starts spouting dramatic lines (or bubbling them) with zero regard for the surroundings. Please get the Vibes. At the very least Cid is also industriously reshaping his shadow-swords into what looks like a very large shadow claw in front of them (shadow..... lawn-mower blades?? thresher??? close enough).

Wouldn't do to run face-first into more plants, even though they've put a nice wide swathe on the way here.

That done, a tendril snakes out from the mass of darkness and slithers itself around both Day and his arm, coating his sage-fragment hand in what seems to be a dark glove. It feels sort of like you'd imagine it would feel if a fish coiled around your hand, but without the scaliness. It's also cold. It's fine.]

Let us see which is faster: us, or the nature of this no-longer plot relevant lake.

[With that, Cid starts really boiling the water behind them, working it up to give them a good boost -- and they start moving upward at a good clip (18), sort of like a two-person geyser. Day is free to help if he wants, they could always use more propulsion. The more propulsion they get the more likely it is that they just get yeeted all the way back to the mech fight immediately.]

[ It's fine. The lake is already cold, Cid's modifications to the water notwithstanding. At least this shadow...glove (???) is going to help him keep a hold of the soul fragment.

And since Day doesn't want to let Cid do all the work, he decides to see if he can add in a little more thrust, because tweaking the force for propulsion shouldn't be too hard, right? They're suddenly going up even faster (14). Hopefully, they're ready to summon their brooms depending on how high up they end up being once they break the surface. ]
shadowkin: (S: they call this a moonsault)

[personal profile] shadowkin 2024-06-24 08:39 am (UTC)(link)
[NYOOMMM up... they... go!!

And they even manage to do a pretty good job munching through the foliage (11) though they might get snagged or slowed down a bit here and there. It is a security measure so that they don't end up blasting off into space, obviously.

The other question is whether Cid is able to transform fast enough for when they break the surface and also summon his broom, which apparently he has to pick one or the other (7). In the interests of not being a literal fish out of water......... let's go with NOT BEING A FISH OUT OF WATER.

So, schwooooooop goes the tail as they go SCHWOOOOOM into the air, his shadows become cloak again, annnnd--]

...... I should practice multitasking transformation magic.

[Day I hope you're ready to catch them both on your broom otherwise we are going right back in the water.]
troublereduction: (day10)

[personal profile] troublereduction 2024-06-24 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
[ Hm. This was a little higher than Day was expecting. He's not going to blame Cid for prioritizing transforming back, because imagine trying to ride a broom while still being a merman.

On the other hand, he's trying to summon his broom, only to have it slip out of his grasp because one hand is slippery wet and another is busy holding onto the jewel (4). ]

Fuck—!

[ And as both Cid and Day fall, Day calls for his broom again, this time managing to grab it with one hand and haul himself up, before swooping down to try catching Cid, just a mere few feet above the water's surface. Hopefully Cid didn't have a terrible landing, because Day's hands are full. ]

[So, the good thing about no longer being a merman: now he has feet!!!!

The bad thing about no longer being a merman is that he's less hydrodynamic, and also getting pelted in the face by raindrops, so really the whole summoning a broom thing or trying to figure out where the Day-broom combo is right now is a little bit of a challenging prospect.

Storm visibility, yay.

The good thing is, shadow child leashes are still in effect -- AKA, instead of Cid trying to catch Day, there's also all these shadow tendrils reaching up for him from Cid's clothes. As for the fellow himself--]

Not bad, not bad.

[Speaking of feet, he's busy being smug because he remembered that water-walking is also a thing, but since the water is a fucking mess he only manages to get one foot-hold while the other leg sinks in up to the knee (6). Still, he sort of manages to..... frog-squat on top of the water until they get themselves sorted out?? Close enough.]

[personal profile] troublereduction 2024-06-24 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
[ ...Those shadow leash-hand-things sure are useful, huh. It's why Day is trying to reach down to see if he can pull Cid up one-handed by using the tendrils as a way to hoist him up. Alternatively, he could just fly off while Cid hangs out down there, but it seems kind of gauche. ]

[personal profile] shadowkin 2024-06-24 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
[He can only look like a silly frog for so long!!

So long, storm-tossed Lake Tycho!! Cid probably still doesn't know the name of this lake...... but he manages to finally summon his broom to give them both a boost, retracting his cloak-tendrils as he does so. Now they can both wobble up into the air and hopefully not get hit by lightning.

I'll be nice and not roll for lightning. ☆

Instead he'll give Day a thumbs up and a questioning look. Everybody and the ally rock in one piece??]

[ Day gives a thumbs up back. So long, Lake Tycho. Maybe they can visit again one day when it's not currently storming. ]
