you opened your eyes, spreading it wide

THIRD QUARTER ALLEGRO
While our newly-arrived wizards have been settling in, learning their magic, and getting to know one another, the sage and their mentor have been busy with a different kind of work behind the scenes—bureaucratic work. It hasn't been particularly exciting, but it has paid off.

Because now, the world is ready to receive them.

Put on your finest clothes, because Granvelle Castle invites you to a welcome ball in your honor.

Didn't bring any fine clothes with you? No need to worry—specially chosen tailors from Central Capital have been commissioned to take care of you, and they will be visiting the manor to get you gussied up in the fashion of your choice for the day (by this, we mean feel free to pick whatever fancy clothes you want for the ball).

As the sun sets on the designated day, all the residents of the manor make their way to the castle. Granvelle Castle stands proud in Central Capital, its lights a beacon in the darkening city, and its doors open to outsiders for the first time in weeks. Upon arrival they're greeted by brightly lit halls, welcoming staff, and a grand ballroom, windows flung open to let in the spring breeze and pale moonlight. Everyone and everything seems determined to make this a cheerful affair, despite the underlying sense of dread and tension.

Live music fills the air, played the greatest musicians in the world. There are some larger ensembles, solo acts; some pieces are of more traditional folk dances, while some are slower, and some are upbeat and avant-garde. Regardless, the floor is open for dancing—grab a buddy and dance the night away!

Lining one wall is a long banquet table, filled with plenty of food and drink, both alcoholic and non to sate the new arrivals. The hors d'oeuvres and small plates comprise an array of delicacies from around the world, with everything from savory lobster bites to the sweetest portions of tres leches you have ever tasted. It seems someone has also put in a specific request for Japanese food—a part of the banquet table has been set aside specifically for Japanese dishes, and this includes small portions of ramen. There also seems to be a plate on the far end of the table filled with lovingly stacked pieces of charcoal... Is that meant to be food?

You aren't the only ones in attendance tonight. Representatives and dignitaries from around the world are also present—they have quite a lot to say about the unusual situation, and they are most curious about these otherworldly individuals tasked with fending off the moon under their national banners. The most dignitaries are from Central, West, and East, while there do seem to be a few representatives from the less populated North and South. Those from Central, West, and South in general seem to be the most social, while the rest are more reserved. There are also a few of the castle staff that seem (begrudgingly) willing to speak with the new wizards. Most are here to chat and mingle—lend them an ear, you may learn something new...

For those tired of socializing, the ballroom opens out onto a breezy, spacious balcony. It looks out over the main thoroughfare leading to the main castle entrance, and the nighttime lights of the Central capital twinkle in the near distance. For those that would rather take a breather, there is a small patio table and a couple of chairs. Despite the waxing moon in the sky, it is a very nice evening.

If you would like to have a chat with an NPC, then please respond to this comment. NPCs will be assigned randomly if no preference is given. While everyone has something valuable to say, they're not giving potentially sensitive info out for free—let's hope your diplomatic skills are up to snuff. We're doing our best to give everyone meaningful conversations, so please bear with us!

JOB BOARD
Rejuvenation. Thanks to your Southern friends' hard work, the South has been saved from a potentially devastating crop failure, and these fledgling towns can continue to grow as they're meant to! Give them a pat on the back and a round of applause.

But the South is not without its scars. While the root cause has been taken care of, the damage has been done. A town's wheat field has been partially destroyed—help them tear out the blackened, dead wheat, till and fertilize the soil, and replant what can be replanted. The City of Clouds, the most prosperous of the Southern settlements, have also offered extra tools, hands, and seeds to help set the town back on the path to recovery. Transport these supplies to the town. Let's hope your broom skills are up to snuff too, because it's a long ride.

Shadows in the night. The residents of the Central capital have recently been reporting eerie sightings after sundown: shadowy figures lurking in corners, the constant feeling of being watched, and, in some extreme cases, these shadowy figures attacking when traveling alone at night. Many reports seem to indicate an odd concentration of these creepy figures lurking around the Granvelle Castle moat, as though trying to find a way into the castle. Residents are understandably frightened and unnerved and cannot go about their nightly business—beat back what shadows you find and make the streets safer for the Central capital residents.

While physical attacks don't seem to do much against them, they dissipate rather easily under magic. Try not to wear yourself to the bone, though—there are a lot of them.

Escorting nobility. The Eastern Blanchett noble family have called an important meeting, inviting nobles and others of import from across the Eastern Country. However, their castle lies beyond Sherwood Forest, a very large, dense, and deep wood—while a fine natural defense for the Blanchett family, it's a bit of trouble for those looking to visit. While the Blanchett's own forest guard is absent, it is your job to safely escort these nobles to the Blanchett abode, and back out. But be careful: lurking in the shadows amongst the trees are all sorts of territorial predators like bears and wolves, not to mention the magical beasts that sneak up on unsuspecting prey. You may come across a brigand or bandit or two, since the forest is a near perfect hiding place for illegal activity. And please—try not to get lost.

Typical of any Easterner, the nobles are reluctant to make much small talk and are a bit suspicious of the new wizards, but they are otherwise pleasant and will generally comply with most requests.

WANDERER TASKS
Can you go a week without ruining food or the pots and pans? Stop being so wasteful and learn how to cook or stop trying.

Learn how to use magic to repair things. Again, if you're going to keep ruining the kitchen at least learn how to put it back together.

TATARA ACTIVITIES
I need milk. I'm trying to perfect latte foam art, but I haven't really gotten the hang of it yet... I used up all the milk (oops, sorry!), so I need more. Actually, could you grab me other kinds of milk while you're at it? I want to experiment! I'm sure other markets in the farther reaches of the world will have weirder milk... Please!

We should start a veggie garden! Or an herb garden? Doesn't matter! I found a nice sunny patch of grass in the training forest—we could dig up that spot, right? Help me get it set up! I need people to dig, and till... Oh! We need seeds to plant, too! Please and thank you~

OOC NOTES
๐ŸŒ™ Welcome to your second event post! Get out your snazzy outfits. It's time to party.
๐ŸŒ™ As you grow into your magic, your character might start realizing they can differentiate between everyone's magic. Everyone has a unique signature, and you may be able to start sensing who cast what, where. Someone put a magical seal on the kitchen door? Smells like Shinjiro's magic. Akira had some of Solomon's sugar? You can sense that, too!
๐ŸŒ™ As you start getting past the basics, your character might realize they have a much easier time with certain kinds of magic over others. For North, this will be offensive and attack spells; for East, this will be intricate seals and curses; for West, this will be manipulative magic like illusions and transformation; for South, this will be healing, purification, and protection. Central? A little bit of everything. Read up on your country if you need a refresher!
๐ŸŒ™ It's been peaceful at home in the manor thus far, hasn't it? Do you think that will last?
๐ŸŒ™ Your OOC plotting post is here! Remember to keep all wider plotting contained to the OOC post, since not everyone checks plurk or discord frequently.
๐ŸŒ™ Our next group to go on their mission is Central. Be ready, heroes...

[ Is he? Truthfully, not entirely, but he's got things he'd like to try. ]

I'll be fine.

[ He says it just as the bandit makes their way towards them, aiming at Solomon first. Before they can land a hit, though, Yamato quietly utters his incantation: ]

Good night.

[ And a mark appears on the bandit's forehead. They freeze in place, quite literally. They are frozen. It looks like they can't move, but it's only for a quick moment, because they start struggling out of the hold as if to try to break free from whatever just happened. ]

[Aw, look at him go with a stun spell! Solomon chuckles as he lets himself turn just enough, the length of his coat fluttering upwards as his wand is extended out.]

Manu Propria.

[An area of lightning whips around his feet before beelining to the frozen thief like a whip, pulling and yanking at his armed wrist with enough force to toss the blade into the dirt, despite the cry of pained protest. The man struggles further, but the Northern wizard just lightly strides forward, not bothered.]

Ah, no no no. You've made your decision.

[As he kicks the blade towards Yamato with his feet, his gaze travels towards the thick foliage coming up overtop of their party.]

Eyes up, we have company.

[It's as much as he's able to say before the twang of an arrow goes off through leaf and air. Think fast, Yamato.]

[ Cute, isn't it... He is learning! He is blossoming. But he picks up the blade, holds it like he at least knows how to stab if he needs to -- and he looks up at the foliage before an arrow goes off. It's aimed right at him. It's a scary thought, and he has to kick his reflexes into gear immediately --

He holds his hands up, knife still in tow, and manages a barrier that blocks the arrow. (Thank you, Urianger.) Even he can't believe he did that, but he keeps his hands in place and sends a jolt of dark energy towards the source of the arrow.

Then, he'll glance at Solomon. He's fine, right...?

[Ah, a defensive spell, very good!

There's shouts from both their travelling party and from the tress above their path as another bandit swings wildly from his perch and teeters to the ground, thrown off balance by the blow and now prone with his bow still in hand.

As the dethroned attacker frantically struggles to his feet with a wild pulling of a knife from his belt, another arrow flies, this time at their panicked noble party. With Yamato's attention to the bowman attacking him, Solomon rushes forward instead, a hand extended out with a spiraling of fire in a barrier of his own, the arrow cracking and sparking as the nobility screams in alarm. As much as he would love to ricochet that shot right back, the pull from the spirits is still too weak. Plus he'd really like to not set the forest on fire.]

No need playing dirty. Come out from your hiding spot.

[Another arrow shoots and ricochets in response, sizzling as it hits the dirt path. Ah well.]

They're trying to get us at all angles, aren't they?

[ Annoying. Annoying and scary! He grimaces for a bit, but it looks like the guys shooting arrows might have realized that the arrows are pretty ineffective by now. It's when they start crawling out of the woodwork and start coming at the duo with their daggers and knives, and therefore doing what Solomon's asked of them.

Yamato panics, sees two of them going for some of the nobles. His panic comes with some sort of newfound determination to harm, to protect, and something happens. The knife he'd caught earlier becomes infused with dark magic, and another makeshift blade made of the same energy appears in his other hand. Granted, neither one of these weapons are capable of being ultra powerful by virtue of this sort of magic not being his specialty, but he leaps into action.

He rushes over towards the nobles and slices at the two bandits trying to attack them. Not even he fully understands what he's doing, but it's enough to at least get them to recoil in pain.

From the corner of his eye, he spots another group rushing towards Solomon's side of the fight.

That's what it looks like, doesn't it!

[He senses the flair of Yamato's magic as the younger man lashes out with two cries of pain. Good, he was defending himself. One less thing to worry about.

Not that Solomon seems all that worried. A tap to the ground, and the dirt grows moist before freezing over. One man is caught in his tracks by the ankles while another slips his footing out from under him. The third keeps forward, a hand axe raised.

The travelling stream of electricity from earlier comes right back with another firm recitation, a sharp cracking sound through the air as the magic hits his weapon, providing a harsh but brief electrocution that crumples the man to the ground in a heap.]

I wonder if they think we're easy to take advantage of, Yamato-kun! What a shame!

[ Solomon, what the fuck-

Yamato looks...exasperated? Nervous? In disbelief? At how easily Solomon's moving and taking out the bandits with ease. Yamato's managed to dispel two of them, at least! That's an accomplishment. It's almost comical how a third one tries to ambush him when he thinks Yamato's not paying attention, but sure enough, he is, and he's quick to slice at that one, too.

Wow. He's actually killing people, isn't he. Hm. That's something to think about later!
]

A-ahaha...yeah. But I think they're learning that if they look at you the wrong way, they're good as dead.

Me? I don't see why.

[Death isn't something he's going for, even with all the flashing light and smooth motions. Defend, deflect, disable - giving them an opportunity to change their minds on escalation before he resorts to bloodshed.

But his preference isn't absolute, so seeing the more physical actions Yamato uses for defense doesn't bother him. He has enough of a moment of respite while the two bandits still conscious on his end regain their footing, so Yamato gets his attention instead.

Manu Propria.

Towards Yamato this time, a circling of stars under his feet to buff his speed. It's not strong, not his specialty in this new world. But it's an unspoken encouragement for him to keep going.]

It's you they need to check their judgement about.

[Because Solomon is getting tired already. The precision he's used to, the lack of accessible energy - it's not balanced, and he can feel himself already starting to wear thin.]

[personal profile] dadsandals 2024-05-03 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Me?

[ He feels the buff as he moves. He's quicker. He's more agile. He can react to the last bandit that jumps them, in the same manner as before...but his movements are smoother and faster. What an incredible buff.

Yamato doesn't fully understand what's happening, but this is incredibly terrifying in a way he can't put to words. Yet, they seem to have done what they set out to do, haven't they?

He looks at Solomon again.
]

Is that all of them?

[personal profile] impacter 2024-05-03 06:20 am (UTC)(link)
[Look at him go! Aw, what a delight.

He'll give a casual point up to where the remaining archer who had been shooting at Solomon earlier was now shoving himself down the tree in some attempt at retreat. Solomon's attention stays drawn at the last bandits in front of him, one finally yanking himself free by the ankle of his icy bonds while the other seems to be questioning all the life choices he'd made up to the point where a wizard was walking towards him with a smile like a dagger.]

Move along, then. Or do you need some further motivation?
dadsandals: (yama38)

[personal profile] dadsandals 2024-05-04 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
[ At least Solomon's actually letting them get away, huh. Yamato should've thought that one through before he sliced them, but.

Well.

Mission complete....
]

...You okay, Solomon?
impacter: (137)

[personal profile] impacter 2024-05-04 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
[He nods, sweat clearly beading up against the sides of his forehead despite how little physical activity he'd been doing in comparison.]

Thanks to your quick reflexes, of course. You did very well, Yamato.

[But he's tired, he's pushed himself, and he looks almost a little embarrassed for it.]

Come on. Let's settle those under our charge before we get too busy chatting. They might be paranoid that our little theiving party might try for a second go.

would u like to wrap up sweet nik

[personal profile] dadsandals 2024-05-05 12:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I did?

[ Wow. Hearing that praise from someone who fights like that? Wow. He's gonna let that sink in, thank you Solomon. He's afraid of you but also, you're kinda cool? Wow.

They really should do what they're supposed to do now, though, especially since those thieves have been taken care of. Hopefully, that's it.
]

Let's go do that then, yeah. Thanks, Solomon.

Yes we can wrap up for new stuff!

[personal profile] impacter 2024-05-05 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You did. Be confident in yourself.

[Ah, though he glances at their escort party, who is taking the stress in numerous ways including throwing a tantrum. The Northern wizard sighs, but gestures Yamato along.]

I'll speak with the loud one. Encourage the others to keep moving, okay? We'll keep them safe.

[Even if they receive their share of disgust and hate, no matter what they choose to do.]
