the beach episode (dated before the east mission)
There's a small slice of sandy beach between mountains and wasteland, where the South meets Central, only an inlet of ocean between them, and that is where Bruno has decided to set up camp.
Literally.
He only had a simple tent and supplies for two initially. Tatara had asked if he could join him on his little trip out and how could he say no? Unfortunately for him, Tatara may have decided to invite everyone else, too, so, welcome, everyone, to the beach episode and a chance to relax after a potentially rough week in the City of Rain.
The sand is warm and fine, the water isn't too chilly, and scrubby little palm trees and plant life dot the dunes. Sea birds are the most active wildlife out here, not counting whatever fish can be found dwelling in the depths of the inlet between South and Central or further out into the ocean. It's comfortable enough... unless you hate sand, that is! You don't hate sand, right?
Since Tatara's arrival, more than Bruno's humble setup can be found.
And, of course, anything the other wizards have decided to bring! Bruno wasn't expecting a party but now that it's here, he sure can't tell them not to have fun however they want.

- There's food fit for a picnic and enough bottles of wine for the evening.
- In the evening, a (non-deadly) bonfire will be built and there'll be pillows to sit on for those who don't want to sit directly on the sand.
- A few colorful rough wool blankets laid out under umbrellas meant to provide shade.
- There's still only one sad-looking tent... However! Bruno's gone ahead and enchanted it so that, when one pushes the cloth flap aside and enters, they'll find a much more comfortable setup inside.
And, of course, anything the other wizards have decided to bring! Bruno wasn't expecting a party but now that it's here, he sure can't tell them not to have fun however they want.

[ If they go home. ]
And nah, not at all. I'm from a tiny village and there's a, uh, kind of a protection spell on it, I guess? No one can get in but you can't get out, either.

I would prefer to think of it as a nice change of pace, though I will understand if you ultimately can't quite consider it as wholly good for that exact reason.
[ Though, he likes to think that the experience will mean something. Asking for the status quo to change is a bit much, probably.
But he can hope it will change. Or Bruno will find greener pastures...or not, with the protection spell. ]
I assume it must have enough resources to thrive despite the fact no one can leave or enter. Though, I wonder what inspired that kind of spell in the first place. Threats from other places?

[ He can't quite claim it's all he knows, exactly. He's a seer. He's seen the rest of the world, here and there, usually out of context. ]
It... well. There was a lot of fighting going on in the area at the time, so, yeah, you could say it was threats from other places. My mom and all the older folks you'll find there, the army was going through and razing everyone's homes, and they were just trying to get away from them.

[ Jing Yuan imagines it could've easily become dire and ended up real bad. The place must be rich in variety of certain foods and the like for that to become a non-issue. ]
...I see, so it is more or less a haven from all of that.
Hopefully one day there will be no need for a protection spell. It does seem like a shame to be cut off from the rest of the world forever, after all.

[ Awkward cough. ]

...How did it all go, exactly? Well?
[ Maybe?? Hm. ]

What do you mean by fell apart?
Was it brought down by an attack?
no subject
[ But Bruno can only sign about that and kick at some sand, looking down rather than at Jing Yuan. ]
Look, can we change the subject? This isn't really, y'know, a thing I want to talk about.
no subject
I had not meant to make this so uncomfortable for you.
[ Jing Yuan's tone is, well. Remorseful for certain, and he decides to look back up at the stars. For what it's worth he does transition into another subject accordingly. ]
Incidentally, do you happen to have a constellation you favor?
no subject
A... constellation? Oh, uh. I don't really use the stars to tell the future but. There's one back home named after a Toucan? Tucana? I always thought that was funny, so that one if I have to pick.
no subject
Tucana, hm?
We do not have 'toucans' on the Xianzhou Alliance, so I would have to trust your judgment on the matter.

It's a pity I don't have an image of them. Birds, I find, are often interesting to witness as they are in their natural state.
[ He is thinking of his many finches now... ]

[ Bruno fumbles with a pocket to retrieve his focus — a brass pocket watch with an hourglass intricately engraved upon it — and holds it out. ]
Su futuro espera.
[ It helps that they're exactly somewhere that fits Bruno's mana area; a quiet place with sand and a clear, starry sky overhead. He did get the sand part right, hopefully, he'll figure out the night sky part next, but until then, it makes it extraordinarily simple to summon up a toucan made of green light. If one had to compare it to something, it could easily be a futuristic hologram.
It forms up from atop his palm, over the focus itself, and flutters its wings before settling to preen its feathers instead with its huge beak. ]
no subject
Except, well. Green. ]
Hmm, definitely not something I had seen before. I had figured that was the case, but now I am certain.
I am most used to seeing birds such as cranes or finches...though it would not hurt to have a bit more variety.
no subject
[ But they were talking about the constellation, right? Bruno reaches out to add some bright shining specks to represent stars on the figure of the bird. Two down by the wings, one up by the eye, and then one at the end of its beak. ]
And this? This is Tucana.
no subject
[ Jing Yuan looks on over at the constellation, eying the way it floats in the 'sky', or rather, in the figure, heh. ]
...Ah, would you look at that?
A perfect representation of the constellation in perfect bird form.
no subject
[ He knows this one. That's fine, right? ]
no subject
[ This is also an area still beyond his general expertise. But, anyway, as he happens to look from him to back what he constructed, he supposes that the night is still young.
Though he doesn't have anymore else to speak upon the matter. ]
...Ah, by the way, I didn't distract you too much from what you were looking for, did I?
no subject
[ Bruno looks away from the toucan, glancing down the beach one way, and then the other. Following that, he'll dismiss the bird made of light and return his focus to a pocket. ]
Not really? I think this is the right kind of place. I think the sand part is the most important. Maybe the night part, too?
no subject
[ Jing Yuan hadn't wanted to cause any troubles in his search, but it looks like he already found what he's looking for. ]
...Because it's more quiet at night?
no subject
Maybe? Either that or... or how stars are connected to prophecy more often than not. I don't use them to tell the future but they fit into the theme.
no subject
[ Especially if it might even be both. That should make it doubly effective, eh? ]
That being said, I suppose I should eventually leave you to it.
It seems you're getting good use out of the place already, however. That too seems to be another sign it is suitable for you, so here is to you getting continuously the most out of it, and a good-night, Bruno.
[ He will wait for the other to give his own good-byes, and then eventually pivot on his foot to begin to leave. ]
no subject
[ Don't have to go. Bruno never even got a chance to ask if Jing Yuan has found his mana area yet. Or rather, he had plenty of chances, but. Honestly, he needs to get better at asking people about themselves. Having anyone to talk to at all who isn't fuzzy and doesn't fit into the palm of his hand is forever such a new concept. ]
R-right. Goodnight, Jing.
[ ...can he call him Jing? He sure hopes so but he worries inwardly regardless. ]
