you opened your eyes, spreading it wide

THIRD QUARTER ALLEGRO
While our newly-arrived wizards have been settling in, learning their magic, and getting to know one another, the sage and their mentor have been busy with a different kind of work behind the scenes—bureaucratic work. It hasn't been particularly exciting, but it has paid off.

Because now, the world is ready to receive them.

Put on your finest clothes, because Granvelle Castle invites you to a welcome ball in your honor.

Didn't bring any fine clothes with you? No need to worry—specially chosen tailors from Central Capital have been commissioned to take care of you, and they will be visiting the manor to get you gussied up in the fashion of your choice for the day (by this, we mean feel free to pick whatever fancy clothes you want for the ball).

As the sun sets on the designated day, all the residents of the manor make their way to the castle. Granvelle Castle stands proud in Central Capital, its lights a beacon in the darkening city, and its doors open to outsiders for the first time in weeks. Upon arrival they're greeted by brightly lit halls, welcoming staff, and a grand ballroom, windows flung open to let in the spring breeze and pale moonlight. Everyone and everything seems determined to make this a cheerful affair, despite the underlying sense of dread and tension.

Live music fills the air, played the greatest musicians in the world. There are some larger ensembles, solo acts; some pieces are of more traditional folk dances, while some are slower, and some are upbeat and avant-garde. Regardless, the floor is open for dancing—grab a buddy and dance the night away!

Lining one wall is a long banquet table, filled with plenty of food and drink, both alcoholic and non to sate the new arrivals. The hors d'oeuvres and small plates comprise an array of delicacies from around the world, with everything from savory lobster bites to the sweetest portions of tres leches you have ever tasted. It seems someone has also put in a specific request for Japanese food—a part of the banquet table has been set aside specifically for Japanese dishes, and this includes small portions of ramen. There also seems to be a plate on the far end of the table filled with lovingly stacked pieces of charcoal... Is that meant to be food?

You aren't the only ones in attendance tonight. Representatives and dignitaries from around the world are also present—they have quite a lot to say about the unusual situation, and they are most curious about these otherworldly individuals tasked with fending off the moon under their national banners. The most dignitaries are from Central, West, and East, while there do seem to be a few representatives from the less populated North and South. Those from Central, West, and South in general seem to be the most social, while the rest are more reserved. There are also a few of the castle staff that seem (begrudgingly) willing to speak with the new wizards. Most are here to chat and mingle—lend them an ear, you may learn something new...

For those tired of socializing, the ballroom opens out onto a breezy, spacious balcony. It looks out over the main thoroughfare leading to the main castle entrance, and the nighttime lights of the Central capital twinkle in the near distance. For those that would rather take a breather, there is a small patio table and a couple of chairs. Despite the waxing moon in the sky, it is a very nice evening.

If you would like to have a chat with an NPC, then please respond to this comment. NPCs will be assigned randomly if no preference is given. While everyone has something valuable to say, they're not giving potentially sensitive info out for free—let's hope your diplomatic skills are up to snuff. We're doing our best to give everyone meaningful conversations, so please bear with us!

JOB BOARD
Rejuvenation. Thanks to your Southern friends' hard work, the South has been saved from a potentially devastating crop failure, and these fledgling towns can continue to grow as they're meant to! Give them a pat on the back and a round of applause.

But the South is not without its scars. While the root cause has been taken care of, the damage has been done. A town's wheat field has been partially destroyed—help them tear out the blackened, dead wheat, till and fertilize the soil, and replant what can be replanted. The City of Clouds, the most prosperous of the Southern settlements, have also offered extra tools, hands, and seeds to help set the town back on the path to recovery. Transport these supplies to the town. Let's hope your broom skills are up to snuff too, because it's a long ride.

Shadows in the night. The residents of the Central capital have recently been reporting eerie sightings after sundown: shadowy figures lurking in corners, the constant feeling of being watched, and, in some extreme cases, these shadowy figures attacking when traveling alone at night. Many reports seem to indicate an odd concentration of these creepy figures lurking around the Granvelle Castle moat, as though trying to find a way into the castle. Residents are understandably frightened and unnerved and cannot go about their nightly business—beat back what shadows you find and make the streets safer for the Central capital residents.

While physical attacks don't seem to do much against them, they dissipate rather easily under magic. Try not to wear yourself to the bone, though—there are a lot of them.

Escorting nobility. The Eastern Blanchett noble family have called an important meeting, inviting nobles and others of import from across the Eastern Country. However, their castle lies beyond Sherwood Forest, a very large, dense, and deep wood—while a fine natural defense for the Blanchett family, it's a bit of trouble for those looking to visit. While the Blanchett's own forest guard is absent, it is your job to safely escort these nobles to the Blanchett abode, and back out. But be careful: lurking in the shadows amongst the trees are all sorts of territorial predators like bears and wolves, not to mention the magical beasts that sneak up on unsuspecting prey. You may come across a brigand or bandit or two, since the forest is a near perfect hiding place for illegal activity. And please—try not to get lost.

Typical of any Easterner, the nobles are reluctant to make much small talk and are a bit suspicious of the new wizards, but they are otherwise pleasant and will generally comply with most requests.

WANDERER TASKS
Can you go a week without ruining food or the pots and pans? Stop being so wasteful and learn how to cook or stop trying.

Learn how to use magic to repair things. Again, if you're going to keep ruining the kitchen at least learn how to put it back together.

TATARA ACTIVITIES
I need milk. I'm trying to perfect latte foam art, but I haven't really gotten the hang of it yet... I used up all the milk (oops, sorry!), so I need more. Actually, could you grab me other kinds of milk while you're at it? I want to experiment! I'm sure other markets in the farther reaches of the world will have weirder milk... Please!

We should start a veggie garden! Or an herb garden? Doesn't matter! I found a nice sunny patch of grass in the training forest—we could dig up that spot, right? Help me get it set up! I need people to dig, and till... Oh! We need seeds to plant, too! Please and thank you~

OOC NOTES
πŸŒ™ Welcome to your second event post! Get out your snazzy outfits. It's time to party.
πŸŒ™ As you grow into your magic, your character might start realizing they can differentiate between everyone's magic. Everyone has a unique signature, and you may be able to start sensing who cast what, where. Someone put a magical seal on the kitchen door? Smells like Shinjiro's magic. Akira had some of Solomon's sugar? You can sense that, too!
πŸŒ™ As you start getting past the basics, your character might realize they have a much easier time with certain kinds of magic over others. For North, this will be offensive and attack spells; for East, this will be intricate seals and curses; for West, this will be manipulative magic like illusions and transformation; for South, this will be healing, purification, and protection. Central? A little bit of everything. Read up on your country if you need a refresher!
πŸŒ™ It's been peaceful at home in the manor thus far, hasn't it? Do you think that will last?
πŸŒ™ Your OOC plotting post is here! Remember to keep all wider plotting contained to the OOC post, since not everyone checks plurk or discord frequently.
πŸŒ™ Our next group to go on their mission is Central. Be ready, heroes...

Repairing

[personal profile] themanwhoerasedhisname 2024-04-22 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Wizards seem like they'd be perfect for anything. We can make sugar and we can repair anything.

[Fancy meeting you in the library again, Bruno. Good job with the repairs]

[ Kiryu! Bruno actually offers him a smile when he stops by. ]

You'd think that, yeah? But I bet there's tons of magic I'd be awful at. Fixing stuff, though? [ He looks the new-looking hoe over once more and sets it down on the table. ] I mean, I did a bit of that back home. Could be that makes it easier?

[personal profile] themanwhoerasedhisname 2024-04-24 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
...is that how it works? Magic comes easier when it's not the first time you do any of this...?

[Huh. How can he apply that to magic, Kiryu thinks. There are a few things he can think he has done before. Car toy racing. Underwater fishing. Karaoke.

........

It's going to be a little hard to apply any of this to magic. There's brawling, though, that'd be the easiest thing to apply]
fallingsand: (03; stuttering or stumbling)

[personal profile] fallingsand 2024-04-25 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe? Could be I'm just being hopeful or could be I'm just, like, used to magic, or both? Not that I could ever do any of this stuff before or anything.

[ His gift was much more specific and usually terrible. ]

[personal profile] themanwhoerasedhisname 2024-04-26 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
You had more than I ever had. Any repairs I made was by hand.

[Kiryu probably had a lot of experience in the upkeep of his surroundings. It's not like he was ever swimming in money to be hiring contractors to solve stuff, he probably had to do thigns himself]
fallingsand: (17;)

[personal profile] fallingsand 2024-04-27 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, same? My magic could only do one really specific thing back home. All the repairing was, like... I did it, normally.

[ Bruno thinks for a second, then sets the hoe down and pushes another item in his collection of broken things across the table in Kiryu's direction: the glass with the chunk broken off the rim. ]

Here, why not give it a try since you've fixed stuff before, too? Just, I dunno, think about it the same way you'd think about repairing anything else you've done.

[Kiryu takes the object, holding it in front of him, trying to focus. How would he fix this, then...? Polish the glassm blunt the sharp edges of the broken part, probably clean it...

It's a bit like a gradual change, and from the looks of it, it's taking him effort because Kiryu was never really a creative person. Envisioning it in his head is difficult for him, but after a bit, he manages to repair it. Looks more functional than anything else, any ornamental decoration the glass had in the broken area is gone, replaced only with smooth crystal. It's plenty obvious what part used to be broken, but hey, it's repaired and that's what matters!]
fallingsand: (05; muttering and mumbling)

[personal profile] fallingsand 2024-04-27 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
See? Ya did it! That's great!

[ It doesn't matter if it isn't a perfect repair job. What mattered is that Kiryu did do it and Bruno was happy to see it. ]

Here, let's test it by adding some water. I bet I can just, um. [ Give him a second to pick his focus up again β€” a brass pocket watch with a stylized hourglass design etched into the cover β€” and point at the now fixed glass. ] Su futuro espera.

[ He's thinking about water. He wants water in the glass. Water should appear in the glass. That way they can check for any other cracks in it andβ€” well, turns out Bruno should have specified he wanted water only in the glass because β€” splash β€” a whole lot of water does appear...

Above the two of them and the table.

And it falls, dousing them, the table, the other items, the floor. It also fills the glass! Because just enough water makes it into it, so, hey, technically it did exactly what he wanted.
]

...ah... th... hm...

[ That fact doesn't keep Bruno from looking aghast. Oh no. ]
themanwhoerasedhisname: 6 (6)

[personal profile] themanwhoerasedhisname 2024-04-27 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
[A sudden shower wasn't what Kiryu expected to see happen at this point! It's pretty uncomfortable to suddenly be doused in this much water, and he's pretty sure if somebody saw how we an area of the library is they'd have a conniption over it.

Still, takes one look at Bruno to see he's pretty horrified over this. Accidents happen, Kiryu is sure, especially when magic is involved. Kiryu just...takes the glass of water, holding it aloft like nothing happened]

Seems there are no cracks. Not too bad for a first attempt from me.

[He's magnanimously giving Bruno a break. Making Bruno feel worse over this situation isn't going to help anyone, who he tries to brush off that now these two and their surroundings are soaking wet]
fallingsand: (26;)

[personal profile] fallingsand 2024-04-28 02:17 am (UTC)(link)
[ That Kiryu continues to carry on as if nothing hilariously awful happened just now speaks very highly of him and, frankly, Bruno feels slightly less terrible as he simply doesn't, well, react.

As expected, anyway.

He stares at the glass Kiryu is checking. It's true. No cracks whatsoever.
]

Y-yeah. That was. That was pretty good, Kiryu. Um. [ He looks down at the water still dripping off of the table. ] M-maybe we should... fix the rest of these, uh, somewhere. Else. Before we get in trouble.
themanwhoerasedhisname: 5 (5)

[personal profile] themanwhoerasedhisname 2024-04-28 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I can just say I did this by mistake, if you want. Everyone has seen me have trouble controlling the strength of what I do.

[It's partly why he was so understanding, really. He has done his fair share of filling his surroundings with sugar and the such -- and Kiryu is used to taking the blame for a lot of things.

He does help pick up the stuff, though, patting Bruno on the shoulder for a moment]

I have been there, don't worry.
fallingsand: (34;)

[personal profile] fallingsand 2024-04-28 10:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Wh-- what? Kiryu, you can't just... no, no, it's. It's fine.

[ He may want to flee the scene of the crime here but he can't fathom laying the blame on anyone else, not even someone who's willing to take it. He snags the fixed hoe and the still-broken lute, although that has to be turned over briefly to pour water out, oops. ]

I... I can probably go find a mop instead. I'm used to messing things up, y'know? This is. I really should have expected this.
themanwhoerasedhisname: (1)

[personal profile] themanwhoerasedhisname 2024-04-30 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You could try to dry it up with magic. Messing up or not, practice is important.

[Is that really a good idea, Kiryu? What if Bruno sets a fire]
fallingsand: (93;)

[personal profile] fallingsand 2024-05-01 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
I... could. [ Bruno stops mid-getting up and looks a the water pooling under the table they're at. ] Um. Maybe I just. I just tell the water to go back where it came from?

[ That's an idea. He isn't going to use fire, though. Definitely no fire, no siree, no thanks, nope! ]

Aah, but what if I vanish everything else, too? What if I vanish us?!
themanwhoerasedhisname: 6 (6)

[personal profile] themanwhoerasedhisname 2024-05-01 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
...that could happen. Let me try.

[Accomodating the few objects had taken, Kiryu points at the wet spots, murmuring 'Dragon of Dojima' to channel his magic.

What happens is that the water splashes upwards, and then descends again. So yeah, that dried up for like two seconds before the water fell again! That was not according to plan]

This is harder than it should be.
fallingsand: (53;)

[personal profile] fallingsand 2024-05-02 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
[ So that's the incantation that Kiryu wasn't fond of. Huh. ]

Maybe precision is the thing we should be practicing...

[ Though Bruno will give it a try himself. He tries to banish the water on the table back to where it came from with an incantation and a wave of his hand. It moves! Vanishing from the table!

And depositing itself on the floor under the table.
]

... [ Welp. ] Maybe we should summon some mops after all.
themanwhoerasedhisname: 6 (6)

[personal profile] themanwhoerasedhisname 2024-05-02 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember this old animated thing about mops and brooms moving around with magic and flooding everything somehow. We'll have to do this the old fashioned way.

[Kiryu remembering his world's version of Mickey Mouse as an apprentice, apparently]
fallingsand: (05; muttering and mumbling)

[personal profile] fallingsand 2024-05-03 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, no, I meant, uh. Here.

[ Bruno clears up his arms, setting the lute back down and taking a step away from the table. He holds out an arm, hand open, and states with far more confidence than before, ]

Su futuro espera!

[ And boom, now he's holding a mop. It sort of magically phases into existence. ]

Ta-daaa. You can call stuff to ya. We're still going to mop it up ourselves, though.
